Rock salt is the lowest-cost way to melt ice on lots and drives. It works best when pavement is above about 15°F. Below that it slows way down, which is when treated salt or liquid helps.

Getting more out of plain salt

Pre-wet it. Spraying brine at the spinner helps salt start working faster and keeps more of it on the pavement.
Anti-ice before the storm. Brine down ahead of the snow keeps it from bonding to the pavement.
Calibrate your spreaders. More salt isn't always more melt. Know your pounds per thousand square feet.
Upgrade when it's cold. For cold snaps, step up to treated and colored salt.
